The NEC Young Composers Forum is an open space in which young composers from anywhere in the world are invited to present their work not in the context of a performance, but rather in a presentation or lecture format. Eight young composers have been invited to talk about their music as a way for specialized audiences —composers, performers, and theorists— to learn more about what is currently happening in new music composition not only in Boston, but also around the world. Therefore, this entrepreneurial project is outwardly beneficial: not only does it benefit audiences, but it also helps young composers gain valuable skills, increase awareness about their work, and possibly make important personal connections that will help them advance their careers.

NEC YCF Session 3: Felipe Lara and Zosha Di Castri

The NEC Young Composers Forum is proud to present the music of visiting composers Felipe Lara and Zosha Di Castri.

Lara is currently a PhD candidate at New York University (GSAS) where he studied with Louis Karchin, Elizabeth Hoffman, and Mario Davidovsky. Additional studies in composition, computer-music, and orchestration with Tristan Murail at Columbia University, as well as lessons with Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann, Marco Stroppa, Michael Jarrell, Wolfgang Rihm, and Yan Maresz. His second string quartet was the winner of the 2008 Staubach Preis in Darmstadt, Germany after the premier performance by the Arditti Quartet with the live-electronics of the Experimentalstudio SWR Freiburg. Two CDs including performances of Lara's music by the Arditti Quartet, Duo Diorama, and Percorso Ensemble, were released in Brazil in the Fall of 2008. This October, Peter Eötvös and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic Hilversum premiered a new orchestral work, commissioned by Donaueschingen Musiktage for their festival. In April 2011, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) will premier <"Ó"> for narrators, choirs, chamber orchestra, and electronics, under the baton of Ragnar Bohlin. Lara teaches in the music department (GSAS) at New York University and lives in the New York City area.
